We should start a list of good places to use lockpicks in hard mode. Maybe even record drops from chests around a certain area inorder to let people know where some of the good ones are.

Anyone up for the task? Maybe taking screenshots of the u map to where it was etc.

random positioning and random drops.. u`ll never be able to identify exactly where the chest is and what type of drop is going to come out of it

Two GoTH in 3 days in morosov trail..and 5 purps in a row after that with no retained lockpick :P

If it is still random, then where do you guys suggest using lock picks if your only going to be using a few? Should it be used in ascalonish areas in hopes for that one rare tyria skinned item, or in doa, or where?

I beg to differ on the randomness of drops. From what I've seen the area and type of monsters in the area have had an impact on what comes out of the chest. I was in Tyria with several Fog nightmares around me and I got a necro staff. This happened several times as I reentered the area repeatedly.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

ive herd this too, if there are elementals around a chest there is a higher chance of an elemental sword, if this is true or not i dont know but definetly one to think about

this may have been random coincidence, but i opened a chest in a heavily hydra-populated area and got an elite ele tome. O.o

i smell an exploit, boys and girls.

Usually, when I run ice floe, around the ice imps I always get a caster weapon or a rune usually. When it is near a mursaat group, its always a rune or some of melee weapon. My best drop has only been a crummy req.13 mursaat hammer, but its usually melee items when a heavly guarded chest spawns surrounded my jade armors.

Thats how the game works, it's not an exploit.

I think I said my earlier post wrong, let me rephrase.

Chest drops will always be affected by the monster near/next to them, but what i meant is, you can run 100 chests surrounded by mursaat and not get a single mursaat item, and, from all the threads like this popping up, i was assuming the OP meant gold/purple ratios.

I do LB point runs in Sulfurous Wastes, and in the first few runs, I had lockpicks with me, and opened all the chests I came across. xD Got only golds. Nothing really useful, though. But yes, it was always a drop related to the monsters near them.

I didn't get more lockpicks because I need money for other things, and have no patience to sell to other players, so buying lockpicks will be a waste of money until I have enough for 1.5k to not matter.

Basically, use picks on chests guarded by enemies whose drops you need. Such as elemental swords near elementals, dead bows nead undead, mursaat stuff near mursaat, etc

Oh, and I was under the impression that the Treasure Hunter rank influenced drop chance. Can't check now, but there should be stuff on wiki about it.
